Get Started - Writing Exercises

Suffering from writer's block? Try some of these quick exercises. There's no right or wrong way to do them- just let your imagination go and have a little fun. Check back again for new writing challenges.

Exercise #1 - The Thief

These two people meet up with the man in the picture below. Write a short scene where the man accuses one of the girls of stealing something from him.

Variation: Write the scene using at least 90% dialogue.

Variation #2: Write the scene without using any dialogue.

Variation #3: Write the scene from the point of view of the innocent girl.

Variation #4: Write the scene from the point of view of the accused girl.

Variation #5: Write the scene from the point of view of the man.

Exercise #2
Home, Sweet Home

This is the view from someone's tent. Who is the person who lives here? Why does this person live in a tent? Describe a dozen objects this individual keeps in the tent.
Variation #1: Your tent-dweller invites a police officer into the tent. Why?
Variation #2: Your character must suddenly leave the tent never to return. Why? What three objects does he or she chose to take along?
Variation #3: Imagine you are lying in the tent. Describe your experience during a rain storm, on a hot afternoon, and after an unexpected snowstorm. Describe what you see, hear, feel, think, smell, and taste. Describe how your emotions change depending on the weather.

Exercise #3:
Fire and Water

Describe in detail three different memories that have something to do with water.

Variation #1: Repeat with fire.
Variation #2: Repeat with food.
Variation #3: Repeat with darkness.
